Last year we had tons of fun reporting on ElfYourself.com a momentary diversion where you paste a picture of your head on the body of a dancing elf. Such Internet merriment not only passes the time but also gives a great escape from work. (It was, after all, brought to us by the folks at OfficeMax, a firm most obviously absorbed in improving worker productivity).

This year the unique diversion award belongs to PimpMySleigh.com, where you get to be Santa’s Sleigh Master and design his ride. Front panels, side panels, hood ornaments, runners — it’s all there for you to design and showcase. This little boost to the Christmas spirit is present by a car insurance firm — again, most appropriately.

I remember well those long Christmas Eve nights as we awaited the arrival of Santa. Looking back the funny thing is I remember more the excitement of Santa than what he actually brought to me every Christmas. There were a few memorable gifts. But nothing matched the pure excitement of knowing that he was coming.

As an adult, creating that magic for my kids is the greatest part of being a parent at Christmas. And as with Santa in my day as a child the magic doesn’t come from a spectacular gift. It comes from the moment, the anticipation and the belief that the Big Guy remembers you and comes year after year.

As a kid I would get little notes from Santa now and then. And those have forever been my Christmas keepsakes. They serve me even these days as I anticipate Santa with my kids.

The Internet is awash in Santa letter sites. Some are most definitely the fly-by-night variety. That is why we’re recommending RemindSanta.com — a professional Santa service that delivers customized letters from Santa for just $5.99.

Most Santa letter sites charge upwards of $15 and you never know what you’re going to get. But RemindSanta.com works not only with the folks from the North Pole but also with the great folks at Click2Mail.com and the U.S. Postal Service. Plus, a percentage of the proceeds goes directly to Toys-for-Tots.

Each letter is traditionally designed, written and signed by Santa himself, and postmarked from the North Pole. For less than the cost of sending a traditional Christmas card your child (or your significant other or your work associates or anyone you might know) can get a personal surprise from Santa Claus in the mail. It makes a memorable gift and will be a cherished keepsake!

The world of Christmas shopping celebrates two key dates — the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday — the Monday following Thanksgiving weekend. Both days celebrate the kick-off of the holiday shopping season, both offline and online.

The problems with Christmas shopping on these days usually out-weigh the so-called great deals. And you can bet just about anything purchased on these two dates will be giftables with mass-merchant quality at best. Great Christmas gift ideas aren’t really going to be found when the masses are out in force competing for the same deals.

So what do you do?

Relax. Breathe in and out. And consider a different approach when looking for unique Christmas gifts.

Take Abernook, for example. Here’s a quality shopping site that completely lacks the hype and hysteria of Amazon or those other mega-malls of the Internet. Products are simply and tastefully arranged. Abernook, much to my delight, sells Willow Tree collectibles – those adorable, faceless creations that evoke such sweet emotion. You can’t get such affordable Christmas gifts at just any shopping site online.

While there take a gander at their seasonal stuff. Abernook features festive reindeer socks for the kids, holiday sweets and treats, and unique decor items you just might want to make a gift of for yourself.

Abernook is bookmarked by us for shopping this season as one of Christmas’ Finest.

One of most cherished memories many people have during the holidays is the annual tour of the neighborhood to view festive Christmas decorations on every neighbor’s front lawn. The display of outdoor lawn decorations is a warm way to spread the joy of yuletide season to friends and family. There is such a variety of lawn decorations that many home owners try to outdo each other with flashy Santa Claus in a sleigh or playing golf, a stunning large Snowman, or a holographic Snoopy and Charlie Brown display. These brightly lit displays are often well-organized and impressive, with many flashing lights. Families especially love to view these decorations, often comparing homes to discover which home has the best lawn decor. Cities often sponsor competitions for the best Christmas lawn decor during the holidays.

If this is the first time for a homeowner, included here is some helpful advice in choosing and setting up outdoor decorations. First of all, start shopping early in the season so that there are more styles available. Don’t go for overdone gaudy or showy displays, instead go for the simple and elegant that communicates a message. Keep in mind that the electric bill will be higher during this time, due to the extra use of lighting. Budget for the increase in expense, and also get an outdoor timer that will automatically turn lights on and off.

The goal for the homeowner is to set up a holiday display that has a central theme to convey a special holiday message, which could be light, humorous or cheery, for example. Don’t mix serious with humorous, as this will look oddly confusing to the viewer. There are so many outdoor lawn decorations sold, that the homeowner should carefully decide exactly where each piece should be placed on the front lawn. Plan to enhance the outdoor lawn displays with adding blinking or clear lights on trees on the lawn. Also, try a message display such as “Season’s Greetings” or “Merry Christmas”, for example.

Remember to stay within a special theme and do not try to combine themes because a central theme to your outdoor Christmas decor will be more striking, directly communicating the unique holiday message.

Stay with the characters you intend to display, do not combine a holographic Snoopy with Santa Claus playing golf. Try to be unique and special in your neighborhood, as many home owners try to imitate each other in order to outdo the other with flashy displays. And remember Christmas is the time of creating special memories and sharing joy with family and friends.

Okay, ladies: listen up! I am here to tell you what men want for Christmas. It isn’t cologne and it isn’t some awful looking tie. Please! It could be NFL playoff tickets, but we know that prices for them are through the roof. Instead, us guys want stuff that is both useful and practical something we won’t pretend to like and hide away in our closets, but stuff that we will use all the time. I’ve made a list to make it easy on you as I know how hard it can be for us guys to communicate to our gals.

1. NFL Tickets!!! No, wait! You can go to eBay and get “discounted” tickets for a mid-January meeting between the Giants and some other team for a lot less than what you’ll pay through a neighborhood scalper. How many fans do you think will put up with ten degree Meadowlands cold on a January day to see the Giants. Oh, yeah, I forgot: plenty. Tickets are likely to go for one or two thousand a piece!

2. Hockey Time. More down to earth in price are NHL hockey tickets. Heck, the toothless boys sat out the season last year and everyone is chomping at the bit to see them play. With no strike on the horizon, your guy is likely to be able to see a complete game. All that bloodletting and head bashing for a song! For grins, get him Stanley Cup tickets. Nothing beats watching a hockey game in June when it is 93 degrees outside!

3. To The Islands! No, not Staten Island and certainly not Long Island. A January or February trip to a warmer climate will be both reasonably priced and fun. Just don’t pick a place that was trashed by one of the 23 tropical systems that attacked the Caribbean, the Americas and the Gulf Coast this year. No telling what amenities are in place! One rule: have the grandparents come to your house to watch the kid. Junior getting the flu is no reason for you not to go! [Blush!]

4. Get Tools. Yes, if your man enjoys tinkering around the house, get him an electric saw, a power drill, or anything else that he can use to fix that darn, lose railing in the family room! [wink, wink] If you aren’t sure what to get him, a gift certificate will do. Sounds tacky? Well, it certainly beats a “thanks, dear” when he opens up his gift and finds a water pump inside!

5. Stuff For His Truck. What a guy really wants is something for his truck. Nah, let him get his own gun rack and ammo; I’m talking about a cold air intake or a performance chip. Something that brings power to the ole pick up! What am I saying? Get him something that he can really use that will bring a smile to his face. Performance exhaust systems, Altezza lights, roof rails, side window vents, fog lights, truck liners, step rails, brake dust shields, hitches, alloy wheels, a set of new tires, head light covers, hood protectors, and an engine pulley are some of the items that are sure to be hot this Christmas. He’ll be happy and he will think you know something about his truck – hey, you are the one who wants him to talk with you, right?

Still not sure? Then ask. Chances are I already mentioned something that he wants. If you are low on cash a set of new truck mats will suffice, but please let him pick the color. Somehow Summer Rose floor mats just don’t match his Silverado’s interior!

Starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, Christmas With The Kranks is an instant Christmas holiday classic. Although not in the same league of Yule tide comedy gems Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story, this film ranks high on my list of holiday laughers. The supporting cast (led by perpetual funnyman Dan Aykroyd) turns in a superb performance, making Christmas With The Kranks an easy film to relate to and one you’ll want to see many times in the years to come…

When the college-age daughter of the Kranks joins the Peace Corps and flies to South America for Christmas, her mother battles with a case of the empty nest blues. But her father, accountant Luther Krank (Tim Allen), takes advantage of the opportunity to shake things up a bit. Tallying all the money he and his wife Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) spend on Christmas, he determines that if they skip Christmas this year, they can afford to go on a week-long cruise instead and still pocket three thousand dollars in savings at the end of the trip.

But skipping Christmas turns out to be more difficult than they thought – especially when it comes to participating in neighborhood traditions such as the mounting of the roof-bound ‘Frosties’ (giant snowmen all the neighbors plant on their roofs). The neighborhood struggle over the Kranks’ reluctance to put up their Frosty leads to some memorable and quite funny scenes where the couple encounters Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Aykroyd), the de facto leader of the neighborhood Christmas celebration. The Kranks continue to avoid all things Christmas related, and having visiting the tanning salon, they’re prepared to go on their cruise Christmas Eve.

But when their daughter Blair (Julie Gonzalo) calls with the announcement that she’s getting married, and more importantly, that she’s on a plane bound for home – the Kranks are forced to miss their cruise and recreate all the festivities of Christmas Past for Blair and her fiancée. But attempting to do a whole month’s preparation in one evening proves to be a monumental task, and one filled with hilarious pitfalls and obstacles…

Offering hilarious scene after hilarious scene, Christmas With The Kranks is one of the funniest comedies in years, and certainly one of the top ten Christmas comedies of all time. At no time does the humor become outlandish or utterly ridiculous as so many such films tend to do. Overall, one of the more lovable aspects of this film is its ability to relate to so many American families. In fact, you might see a bit of your own family in Christmas With The Kranks… The fact that it’s one of those rare holiday classics with the potential to be seen year after year makes Christmas With The Kranks a definite must-see movie…

Van Dyke portrays the loveable toymaker Mr. Finnegan, and also reads the book on an accompanying CD.

Mr. Finnegan is no ordinary toymaker. Peering into his glistening snow globe, the white-haired, bespectacled toymaker knows he must intercede in the life of one little girl in the small town of Pinebough. His providential meeting with Maggie, a resentful girl who doesn’t believe in the magic of Christmas, is the beginning of a series of miracles that will change her heart forever.

Told with delightful whimsy and poignancy, author Dan Farr has created a Christmas story that will resonate with both young and old. His book is available nationwide.

Jimmy Durante narrates this 1969 animated creation that features the birth of Frosty, a happy upbeat snowman brought to life by a magical hat. The story is based on the popular Christmas song of the same name, and Durante’s narration and singing brings the animation itself to life. One of the best holiday cartoon specials ever created, Frosty The Snowman will be a part of Christmas celebrations for years to come.

Frosty The Snowman follows the exploits of a group of school children trapped at school on Christmas Eve. Feeling guilty that her students are forced to attend class on Christmas Eve (with snow outside nonetheless), a schoolteacher hires a local magician named Professor Hinkle as entertainment. But Professor Hinkle is anything but a master of his trade. He entertains the kids only by means of their laughter as his ridiculous screw-ups. Frustrated by his failure to perform the famous magic trick of “pulling a rabbit out of a hat,” Hinkle hurls his old top hat out the window. But when the children are dismissed from class, the hat finds its way onto the head of a snowman named Frosty.

A gust of wind blows Professor Hinkle’s discarded hat onto the lifeless snowman’s head, and “presto”! …Frosty the snowman comes to life with a passionate bellow of “Happy Birthday”! Immediately, Professor Hinkle decides that he wants to keep his hat after all (so he can profit from its obvious magic powers), but the kids manage to fight off his advances in order to save Frosty. But Hinkle is the least of Frosty’s worries. The thermometer is on the rise, and the kids conclude that Frosty needs to get to the North Pole or else he’ll melt away. Together, they travel to the local train station to buy Frosty a ticket.

Finding the ticket price too hefty, Frosty and his friend Karen become stowaways on a north-bound train. What they don’t know is that Professor Hinkle is hot on their trail, and he’ll do anything to eliminate Frosty and steal the hat. Will Frosty survive? Only the appearance of another magical Christmas icon can save the day…

A holiday television classic rivaled by none, Frosty the Snowman is brilliant Christmas television programming the entire family can enjoy. Its central theme of life and death are aptly portrayed by a snowman’s good cheer and the love a young girl harbors for him. Frosty’s charisma solidifies this as an enduring TV classic, right up there with all-time greats such as Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965), and How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)…

I recently did a radio interview with a station based out of Arkansas and we were discussing the differences between doing your Christmas shopping at the local mall versus shopping online. I made the point that many consumers still like to go the mall to get some of that Holiday vibe and the sense of giving that is such a large part of the Christmas spirit. The DJ that was interviewing me then pointed out that you lose a lot of that warm and fuzzy feeling when you have to fight the crowded parking lot and the rush of finding gifts when you only have a limited amount of time to spend at the mall.

Don’t Fight Those Crowds

In this case, the DJ was a big proponent of online shopping and online coupons, hence this is the reason I was on his show, but he brings up some good points. People are starting to use online shopping as a strong alternative to fighting the crowds at local stores and malls. This is evident by the fact that online shopping in 2006 has really gone through the roof and is up 23% over 2005 numbers as consumers are starting to catch on to the convenience and great deals that can be found online.

Information At Your Fingertips

As I pointed out in the interview, the main benefits of doing your Christmas shopping online are two-fold. First, the amount of information and research at your disposal on the Internet is quite impressive. This includes buying guides, user reviews of products, and price comparisons at different online stores. All of these are not going to be readily available to you when you walk into a brick and mortar store to do some shopping. Secondly, many online retailers offer coupon codes that can get you things like free shipping, or 10%, 15% , or sometimes 20% off your purchase. These coupon codes are typically only for online usage. Free shipping coupons in particular are very popular around the Holidays, as many consumers are afraid to shop online thinking the shipping charges will outweigh any benefits.

Keep Your Sanity

So this Holiday shopping season I would urge you to try shopping online and to keep a running total of the savings you received when using online coupons. For me personally, the time wasted in busy parking lots and long lines in stores also has a value, but it is hard to put a dollar figure on time wasted. Nonetheless, I found the holiday season to be much more enjoyable and peaceful when I avoided busy malls and shopped exclusively online. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
