Site of the Week: The Christmas Price Index

Posted on October 18, 2007 in the Christmas Online category

sow07.gif How much are those turtle doves going to cost this year? What about those lords a-leaping? The five gold rings? Just what is the cost of that partridge in a pear tree? Our site of the week answers these burning questions at the PNC Christmas Price Index, where they’ve been doing this for more than 22 years.

PNC is is a financial services company. And we’re guessing that the other 365 days of the year they are just giddy over things like spreadsheets, fractions and profit-to-earnings ratios. But every year right after Thanksgiving they stop the clacking of their adding machines to cook the books of Christmas.

And these folks are serious. Did you know, for example, that the cost of a pear tree jumped 44% from 2005 to 2006? It’s enough to make an Ebeneezer out of all of us.

Bookmark this baby and give it a visit while you’re still burping the turkey. It may give you pause to consider the wallet before Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Or it may just give you a deep yearning for the good old days of 1995 with the PNC Christmas Price Index hit a 22-year low.
