Decorating the Victorian Christmas Tree

Posted on August 30, 2007 in the Christmas Online, Christmas Opinion category

The Victorian era was a golden age in the history of Christmas. And nothing is more Victorian than the Christmas tree. That is the subject of this article found at Victoriana.com.

There’s something phony about Christmas trees these days. I’m not talking about artificial trees because even folks living in lands absent of pine trees can have a Christmas tree now. But as we adorn our fake trees with Disney ornaments, all manner of flashing lights, moving trains and decorate them in “themes” on every topic from Star Wars to favorite foods nothing beats the charm and old-world quality of a Victorian tree.

After all, those trees were decorated with items built by hand. Who would guild nuts to adorn a tree these days? Victorian era folks did that. No wonder we look back on those times so fondly!
